Most everyday I get emails from songwriters asking me where can I get my demos done that will be a top notch professional job. Well I always send them to Nashville music production. They have been my demo company since 1995 and they are by far the best demo company I've found They are not cheap but they are the best. Before you spend one dime ask them for a free sample of their work. They're honest and hard working no job is to big or small. Juanita Ford

You made me cry, and I cried a lo-ot, inny how ahm leaving, honey thanks a lot!" Can you help me find the lyrics? May the ghost cowboys in the sky bless you! Bakersfield Country Music is alive and well despite all predictions by these new fangled city slickers moving into town hell bent on erasing our "hillbilly" image. I've been reading about what those polecats in Nashville are trying to erase the traditional country image too. It's like I told some of these outsiders coming into Bakersfield. "Us Oakies are like cockroaches, It's pretty hard to kill us off." Currently in Oildale which is included in Bakersfield across the Kern River right by where Merle Haggard grew up at 1303 Yosemite there are four true honky tonks thriving and doing quite well thank you. These include the Kern River Belle, The Longbranch, El Tejon Bar and Trout's. Across the river down on Buck Owens Blvd. Buck Owens is packing them in every Friday and Saturday night at his Crystal Palace. Despite all dire predictions that country was dead in Bakersfield Country Music prevails. I am also happy to say there is a massive amount of talent in Bakersfield and many young artists eager to follow in the footsteps of Buck, Merle, Tommy Collins, Bonnie Owens, Ferlin Husky, Jean Shepard, Joe and Rose Lee Maphis, Maddox Bros. & Rose and so on. So all we have to do is wait out these creeps that run the music business and hopefully it will return to true country that the masses crave such as Buddy Jewell of Nashville Star fame. As long as Fender guitar company keeps making Telecasters there will always be Country Music. The kind we like in Bakersfield. Glenn J. How about a list of the radio station/DJ's that play traditional classic country? At WOBO 88.7 fm in Cincinnati, most of the artists that you have listed, is what makes up my music collection and what I play on my Friday Show called Muldoon til Noon . I play classic traditional country along with traaadition Bluegrass music from 8 am til Noon. I think it would be nice to let others know where they can hear those artists still "on the air". I really love K.T. Olsin's style of singing & her exceptional style & voice is awsome. K.T.Oslin style is exceptional what a voice. I am sure she is a wonderful person also. I have been writing poetry, and one of poems I thought would be perfect for her to add some lines to it, and make a beautiful song, for her to record, if she would like. Could you get this message to her, and have her get back to me, if she might like to use it! I felt that she would be the only person this poem would be suited for, to make music from,if she would so desire.I would appreciate it, if you would pass this email onto K.T. Olsin the country singer. If you can't, could you find her email address & send it to me, so I can email her. Thanks, Carol - precious1c@iwon.com

A friend sent me all kinds of "stuff" on Sammy Masters, and I thought I'd write you because of the handy click-on to the RHOF. I am Jimmy Bryant's sister, Lorene Bryant Epps and anything with my brother Jimmy's name in it perks up my interest. You know Jimmy's music was referred to many times as rockabilly style, although we all know he was known as playing mostly country jazz. The friend I'm refering to lives in Estonia, Europe and the reason he contacted me was about the Biography I wrote about my brother: Jimmy Bryant, Fastest Guitar In The Country. He heard about my book word of mouth and looked up my website. I've been shipping the books out to many countries. (They're selling well over here too.) The GMHOF and The CMHOF both are selling them, plus others like JK Lutherie. I thought you may be interested in spreading the word about Sammy Masters and also Jimmy Bryant. Great subjects. The Fender Co. is building a Jimmy Bryant Signature Telecaster that will be unveiled and presented to Jimmy's son in July at the NAMM Show, Nashville, in July this year. During that same period of time the CMHOF is having a book signing for me.  Another thing that's being done this year is Sundazed Music Co out of NY is reissuing a three CD set that will be out in November this year. Jimmy's son is doing a CD featuring stuff that Jimmy never recorded. So much since my book came out. It seemed to start a landslide! I'm so glad because I've promoted Jimmy in many ways since he died in 1980. Thanks for "listening." All my addresses are below. Lorene

I've read the Profile of T. Texas Tyler on the web page 'Mini Profiles on Traditional Country Artists and Legends'. I have this great old album of Tyler's, called simply 'T. Texas Tyler' it is released in 1988, but I saw a picture of the sleeve on the internet, marked 1959. My question is: in what year were these songs recorded? I only located the year of Filipino baby.
- Careless love
- Filipino baby (1946)
- Gals don't mean a thing
- I hung my head and cried
- In my little red book
- It's been so long, darlin'
- Oklahoma hills
- Remember me (first heard this great song on an old Bob Dylan tape!)
- T. Texas blues
- Who's to blame
- You nearly lose your mind
- You turned a good man down
Hope you can help me out. Joost van Waert, The Netherlands - joostvan@pop5.inter.NL.net

I have been trying to find a song that was probably written in the 80's by whom I think is a male solo artist. I only know some of the words, so here's a try. "I can see you, your brown skin shinning in the sun, you got your top rollled back....." and then it says another line something like,"I can tell you my love for you will still be strong.." I you can identify the artist or song title that would be awesome. Thanks a bunch. Billy Coode - sic787@midsouth.rr.com

We were so sorry to hear of the death of Mrs Cash. Our prayers for the family are mingled with those of countless others. We understand that many people were able to attend the funeral and that Mr Cash held up well, as did the rest of the family. My son, husband and myself were also planning to be there. Unfortunately we had an automobile accident in Chattanooga and were unable to complete the journey. Probably there are many other stories about people who wanted to attend, but were prevented by work, finances, distance, etc. If this page is still open and information can be forwarded to the family, these stories might be a comfort in their time of grief. Thanks for this time to share. Jim, Joanne, James Anthony, Columbus, Georgia - maryjanthony@hotmail.com

NOTES AND MEMORIES
JUNE CARTER, THE TALENTED LADY FROM THE CARTER FAMILY! HOW WELL WE ALL REMEMBER JUNE CARTER, THE CRAZY FUNNY WOMAN OF THE CARTER FAMILY. HE SAID SHE WAS SOOOOOOOO BEAUTIFUL AND HE WAS SMITTEN BY HER TALENT AND BEAUTY AND NEVER FORGOT HER. HE SAID THEY ALL LOVENLY CALLED HER "JUNE BUG". SHE WAS ON THE SHOW WITH THE GREAT ERNEST TUBBS. JUNE CARTER WAS MUSICALLY TALENTED, SINGING LEAD AND HARMONY AND PLAYING VARIOUS MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS AND ALWAYS BEING THE TALENTED CUT- UP AND ENTERTAINING FOLKS WITH HER CHARM AND WITTY SILLY WAYS. JUNE MET JOHNNY CASH AND FELL TOTALLY IN LOVE WITH HIM. JUNE STAYED LOYAL AND HELPED JOHNNY THRU SOME HARD YEARS AND TOGETHER THEY BECAME WORLDWIDE FAMOUS WITH THEIR DUETS, AND SHOWS. Friend. It seems to me that writing about "traditional country" is kinda like trying to merge into the Daytona 500's tenth lap in a 1958 Chevy Impala with Continental kit. Sure the quality and beauty of that classic beauty can stand on its own against the best but, 1200 horses, two inches off the ground-? no competition. So, you just drive around the infield letting as many people get a look as can pull their eyes away from the high octane show that is modern Country. No, complaints. Just hard learned understanding. "I love to hear Jimmy Dickens sing/The songs of yesterday. And when old Hank belts ouy the blues/ You know it blows my socks away. I love to hear Faron Young singin' the songs I love so well./ Let's get back to the Country, 'Fore the Country goes to Hell". Thanks for the ear to chew, and remember," That fam'ly tradition that Bocephus sings about/ Has not got one Damn thing to do with screamin': Workin' out. Thanks, Rich Verdugo ( Yes, I am unpublished) TrooBlu52@aol.com

A friend sent me some photo copies of photos taken at our live tv show probably about 56 or 57 "midwest Jamboree". KHOL TV had the hour and half show every Fri nite from 56 -59. The band was the "Blue Rythmn Boys". I was the resident rockabilly. As luck would have it the face on the photo that might be me is faded so I am not sure BUT we are searching some archives soon. The rest of the band looks good though. Dick Hill and I are about the only ones left in this area (and on earth). The GLASER BROS made a appearence on the show at least once. Stan Anderson was our leader. I still sing and record. Bob Ayres - bobayres1@hotmail.com

Hello, Traditional Country Music Fan: Let me introduce you to one of the GREATEST COUNTRY MUSIC VOICES SINCE HANK WILLIAMS: no other than: VERNON OXFORD ... now on the charts with songs from his current CD; THE OXFORD TOUCH. Due to songs like: IF KISSES COULD TALK, WALKIN' MY BLUES AWAY, I LOVE TO SING and THE GREAT STONE FACE, among others, Vernon Oxford has risen rapidly within a very few months on the Top Trax indie, traditional chart, to No. 13, up from No. 50 only last month; and, up to no. 26 on a Worldwide chart. Now, due to the success of THE OXFORD TOUCH CD, I have within the past several weeks released a new CD entitled: IF KISSES COULD TALK (DUE to the excellent airplay on this particular song), with one s ong in particular dedicated to Vernon Oxford, entitled: HE'S AN UNKNOWN SUPERSTAR. This new CD has 20 more of my VERY traditional songs, now getting airplay around the world, including songs by Owen Priester Jr., a cousin of mine, who wrote WALKIN' MY BLUES AWAY; Dick Flood with OLE LADY BLUES (A yodel song); DEATH and TAXES, by me; Diane Carnes (a niece) with I'VE LOST HIM TO A HONKY TONK; and Carl Story, with a bluegrass version of one of my religious type tunes: GREEN PASTURES and BLUES SKIES...among others... Disc jockeys needing this type of material for airplay should E-mail me for DJ copies. And, to those DJs who have already helped put Vernon at the No. 13 spot on the U. S. Top Trax traditional chart, I again thank them a MILLION TIMES over for their dedication to the music of the incomparable Vernon Oxford. Musically, Everett Corbin for: Vernon Oxford and: THE OXFORD TOUCH - ejcorbin@juno.com

WHOEVER YOU ARE, I LOVE YOU!

Good News. "King of Bluegrass: The Life and Times of Jimmy Martin" is done!! The film will have its World Premiere at the 34th Annual Nashville Film Festival on April 29th. Just a few days after the premiere, the film will screen at the Maryland Film Festival, May 1-4. The exact play date for Maryland will be set in the coming weeks.
We will soon start organizing theatrical screenings in other cities. In a couple weeks the film's website should be updated to include details about all screenings of the film. Check the site out at http://www.kingofbluegrass.com
We are hoping to release the film on video sometime this summer. We've created a list of people to notify about the film's release on video. If you know folks that would want to be updated about the film or would want to buy a video, refer them to the contact link on www.kingofbluegrass.com.
The film would still be nothing but a bunch of tape sitting on the shelf if not for the help of a lot of people. More than anyone, the film's editor and post-production supervisor, Kathleen Dargis, has been the catalyst for the getting the film done. Check out her website at www.kathleendargis.com - Thanks, George Goehl, Straight Six Films, 2145 W. Division St., Chicago, IL 60622 - www.kingofbluegrass.com - 773/772-0530

For my grandfather, please help me find this song title/artist. In the spring of 1998, 5 years ago when I learned I was expecting our first child. I saw a video on CMT. It pays tribute to my Grandfather's life as a farmer. His 80th Birthday is in a few short weeks, he is very ill and I'd love to play this song for him at long last. I've only heard it once, but the words have haunted me. Here is what I remember...
"Thank you God for the sun...
for bringing life to the seeds I sow
it's the only life I know...
Thank you God for the rain..."
The video depicts a middle aged man walking through hay fields on a sunny day and shows him sitting in church as he reflects on both his life and his fathers life. If you can please help, any direction would be appreciated. seedsIsow - dolank@sympatico.ca

I don't usually stick my nose in someone's business, but if radioho does not reply, then where do I go? To you. Look at what the message I posted  says, can you do that? Well I am more than a fan and I'm willing to accept any contact with her, whether it's through a website, postal, telephone, secretary, agency, fax, etc. I was eventually going to try contacting her to introduce myself but now I feel it urgent. What was (Ruby Blevins) Patsy Montana's Mothers name, and maiden name? I left Montgomery County, Arkansas in 1943 at age 16. Ran the roads and worked music as a Side Man, Playing Fiddle and Steel Guitar for 40 years, Moved back to Arkansas and played many gigs in this Area. My name, Herb Meeks, is on My Steel Guitar, Several old timers have seen my name Meeks on the guitar and asked where I was born, and what bunch of Meeks clan I came out of, When I gave them the family history that I knew, each one told me I was related to Patsy Montana, and Patsy's Mom was a Meeks. Do you have any information that would help settle this as I lost track of a lot of relatives, And I was born in the same area as Patsy. I am now 76 yrs. of age. EVY'S "BOOT-HEART" SONG ... "WE CAN LET LOVE WIN" sung and produced by BRIAN GAGNON, has now been mailed to radio on CAPRICE Radio CD Singles "50th ANNIVERSARY ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK". Born in Toronto, Canada, the son of a preacher, BRIAN started playing music and singing in the church choir. At the age of 16, he formed his own band, playing songs by the Beatles and other British bands. He learned to play guitar, bass, drums and keyboards. By the age of 18, he did his first record and was hooked. In his 20's, he was playing all over the country and recording regularly. Always interested in the production side of music, he started working in recording studios. By the time he was in his 30's, he had worked with the likes of Shania Twain and other artists that went on to do big things. Presently Brian has his own studio and continues to produce and record music full time. WE CAN LET LOVE WIN binds the very fine threads of emotions which rip at the deepest part of the heart, pleading for an ultimate resolution in a peaceful & forgiving life and love. In 1952, CBS radio carried a series of 15-minute programs sponsored by Aunt Jemima pancake and cake mixes. These shows were transcribed in Nashville and featured several top performers of that era including Hank Williams, Ernest Tubb, Red Foley, Little Jimmy Dickens, Cowboy Copas, Tommy Soseby and two up-and-coming youngsters Faron Young and Ray Price. I am only aware of three of these shows extant. If anyone has any of these shows or any information about them, please email me. Thank you. Ken C. - Kcamp99@yahoo.com

HE CALLED IT "FOREVER"
I was granted one dream that would surely come true
I wishes for forever to live it with you
This lifetime is moment, too soon it is gone
Forever with you would not be too long
He captured my dream before it could pass
Engraved it with moonbeams and framed it to last
Hung it far on a star to let the universe see
He called it "Forever" for you and for me
Now is God's miracle, wishes come true
From earth to endless heavens, his love gives me...YOU!

BAKERSFIELD, CA - Reminder of the Bakersfield Country Music Museum's next fund raiser is at Trout's on Feb 09 Sunday from 1pm. Live Music by the greatest talents all day long! Thanks to all that help to make TROUT'S continue to keep it's doors open. Just that simple trip to in once in a while helps it keep chugging along. I, and we, personally appreciate every drop of time and effort so many musicians and patrons have invested into the history and the future of Trout's. There are so many names, so many people, so many lives that have been touched within these walls. It was more than a business for Ralph Trout and certainly more than a job for Vern Hoover. Thank you Bobby Durham and the Tex Pistols, Red Simpson and Larry Petree, The Spankey family, The Dooleys, Dwayne Maples, Oscar Whittington, Tommy Hayes, Sonny O'Brien, Billy Mize, Hershel and Rose, Russell and Lavelle and Katie Dooley and so many more for continually contributing so very much to the preservation of Trout's and the Bakersfield Sound. Thank you. Sincerely, Rockwell and the Staff of Trout's - TroutsNightclub@aol.com

Dear Country Music Friend and DJ: Let me introduce myself: I am Everett Corbin, a former editor of MUSIC CITY NEWS and now promoting the new CD by Vernon Oxford entitled: THE OXFORD TOUCH; And just week released on Corbin Records a 20-song compilation of my songs, recorded by Vernon, Carl Story--even me. Getting most action so far on THE OXFORD TOUCH is IF KISSES COULD TALK, WALKING MY BLUES AWAY and I LOVE TO SING.
Due to the success of THE OXFORD TOUCH and IF KISSES COULD TALK, I decided to release a CD by that title, some 20 songs written by me over the years. Remember Dick Flood, he's on there with OLE LADY BLUES, a yodeling song; Diane Carnes sings: I'VE LOST HIM TO A HONKY TONK, and Jo Anne Marvec sings: I DON'T WANT THE RING. I sing a few songs, one in tribute to Vernon entitled: HE'S AN UNKNOWN SUPERSTAR, and then I tackle the vexing tax issue in DEATH and TAXES, a recitation, from my non-commercial CD: AMERICA TODAY.
DJs needing copies of either or both should e-mail me at: ejcorbin@juno.com; or, write: Everett Corbin, Corbin Music, BMI, 5801 Halls Hill Pike, Murfreesboro, Tenn. 37130.
Big Al Field of Australia calls THE OXFORD TOUCH his top pic in all the years he's been playing recordings. And that's got to be quite an endorsement. Musically, Everett Corbin, producer and songwriter on THE OXFORD TOUCH

Hi, Thought you might be interested in a few more reviews of some recent releases. Joe - rossjoe@hotmail.com

PORTER WAGONER - UNPLUGGED
Shell Point Records SPCD-1003
www.shellpointrecords.com
Total playing time - 31:39
Street date - 9/10/02
I was thrilled by the idea of Porter Wagoner releasing an acoustic "unplugged" album, but I was somewhat disappointed that the final mix on this 32-minute 10-track project also included standard Nashville accompaniment of drums, electric bass and pedal steel. And where is the fiddle? While dobro (played by Scotty Sanders) and harmonica (played by Terry McMillan and Mickey Raphael) are prominently featured, I missed the fiddle's wail. I wish they would've enlisted a Mack Magaha soundalike to saw a few bars. And maybe add a few fingerpicked rolls from someone who picks like that ol' Wagonmaster Buck Trent.
A Grand Ole Opry regular for nearly half a century, I recall some of Wagoner's greatest duets with Dolly Parton and Skeeter Davis. A highlight of this album are the two songs he sings with Willie Nelson -- Silver Eagle Meets the Great Speckled Bird , and Family Bible. However, both Porter and Willie are distinctive lead vocalists, and they just don't seem to have the harmonious blend of a sweet duet so the two songs could be viewed more as a commercial novelty than as unplugged musical masterpieces.
A devotee to many musical styles from old mountain songs to honky tonk and bluegrass, Wagoner could've really seized the opportunity to create something special with rawboned traditional drive and energy by returning to musical roots. Unfortunately, "Unplugged" serves up standard country fare with just a slight twist too subtle to almost notice. Like others have recently done, maybe Porter should've also jumped on the bluegrass bandwagon to sing songs that his mother taught him. He could've torn up the Autry Inman classic, "I Cried Again" with that kind of instrumentation. On "Unplugged," Porter Wagoner's musical pompadour sadly falls flat.
Songs on this album include: Silence in the Wind, (Why Don't You) Haul Off and Love Me, Silver Eagle Meets the Great Speckled Bird, Blue Velvet Band, I Cried Again, Lost Forever in Your Kiss, After All, Moses Jones, Satan Wore Satin, and Family Bible. (Joe Ross)

LARRY CORDLE & Lonesome Standard Time
Songs From The Workbench
Shell Point Records SPCD-1004
Shell Point Records, 816 18th Avenue South, Nashville, Tennessee 37203
www.shellpointrecords.com
Total playing time - 48:36
Larry Cordle and LST deliver the hard-drivin' bluegrass goods with his new project, "Songs from the Workbench." Self-described as "a bluegrass band with a rock 'n' roll attitude," this group clearly likes to serve up their 'grass with a lot of in-your-face emotion. Cordle's rhythm guitar and vocals are joined by some stellar musicians in Lonesome Standard Time - Terry Eldredge (bass/tenor vocals), David Talbot (banjo/baritone vocals), Booie Beach (lead guitar), and Jenee Keener (fiddle/high baritone vocals). Keener sings the lead vocals on the bluesy and bouncy "Can't Let Go." As the newest member of the band, Jenee Keener seems to be fitting right in, hitting the ground running, and serving up some hot soulful fiddling and singing. Eldredge sings lead on "I'm Not That Good At Goodbye," a classic country song written by Bob McDill and Don Williams. While all the cuts are strong, a couple of my favorites on the album are "Rambler's Blues" and "Workin' End of a Hoe." Buried in the copious liner notes is a mention of who is providing those brilliant dobro riffs - it's none other than Rob Ickes. From start to end, "Songs from the Workbench" will take you on an entertaining musical journey that you won't want to miss out on. A very professional product. Nice mix of songs. Great musicianship. Hard-driving bluegrass energy. And lots of fun too (don't miss the hidden bonus "frog" track). This album gets two thumbs up from me. (Joe Ross)

VALERIE SMITH & LIBERTY PIKE - No Summer Storm
Bell Buckle/Rebel - 0603
www.valeriesmithonline.com
Total playing time - 32:35
street date - 8/27/02
Valerie Smith's third album, "No Summer Storm" is an exhilarating romp through a field of new traditional bluegrass. With a distinctive excitement and flair in her voice, Smith is part storyteller as she belts out songs about old Bill the sawmill man, young Sarah who is being counseled to wait awhile before marrying, or the loner Jacob Spence who murdered a man and did time. The title cut, "No Summer Storm" (written by Lisa Aschmann and Mark Simos) compares love to an ocean to be conquered. The same songwriters penned "I'm Lookin' for a Man"...who can stand his ground. Nominated for IBMA's "Emerging Artist of 1999 and 2000," Valerie Smith and Liberty Pike are a band to watch and, of course, listen to. Smith has also been recognized by midwest bluegrass fans when she took home SPBGMA's "Traditional Bluegrass Female Vocalist of the Year"award in 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2002.
The year 2001 was also a tough and tragic one for the group when they lost mandolinist Eddie Miller to an automobile accident. Miller and his brother John, former guitarist for Liberty Pike, can be heard on four of this album's 11 tracks. The album features a core group consisting of Liberty Pike's current lineup: Becky Buller, fiddle and vocals; Daniel Hardin, bass; John Wesley Lee, mandolin; Randall Conn, banjo and resonator guitar; and Stephen Mougin, guitar and vocals. Tom T. Hall guests on "Sit Down and Cry," playing guitar on a song he co-wrote with wife Dixie. The album closes with Valerie and Kraig Smith's "Where the Bluebells Grow," a nostalgic tribute to their home in west Missouri. There is some excellent talent on this album, and the band presents some wonderful new material that will make you sit up and take notice of some of bluegrass music's rising stars, Valerie Smith and Liberty Pike. (Joe Ross)

Bakersfield is experiencing a resurgence of the glory days of the 50's and 60's. The city's population has ballooned to 500,000 and is producing bands that are bringing Bakersfield back on the world's music scene. One of the top grossing rock bands in the world KORN hails from Bakersfield and their roots come directly from Country. This ol' cowboy had on occassion played or sat in with two of the boys in the band fathers who played the nightclubs in Bakersfield back in the 70's and 80's.Their is another band called Adema from Bakersfield that is rising in national prominence expotentially. The band Big House that had a national hit hails from Bakersfield. Now I want to report on a fellow that is one inch away from signing with a major record label. His name is Rudy Parris from Visalia, Ca 75 miles up the road from Bakersfield and a town this ol' boy (Glenn) was born in. Rudy just got off the road with Hank Williams III. Rudy is a highly gifted singer/songwriter that is so coveted that Buck Owen's has him play at The Crystal Palace when Rudy is not playing other forms of music such as blues and rock. Rudy and many other talented musicians in the great San Joaquin Valley are staging Bakersfield for a comeback unlike it has ever experienced. From time to time I will report on talent such as Rudy's that cannot be ignored because the talent is so massive. In the late seventies, I was with some friends just outside of Nashville. We stopped at a nightspot at around ten p.m. in the evening. As I remember, there was a singer-owner there. It was not a big place. It seems the place may have had the name of Dottie or West, and the singer [who sang] was named Dottie West. Could this have been the well known today, Dottie West, or am I having a senior moment? Would she have ever owned and sang in a small club such as this was in the late seventies? My name is Owen Bly; I manage the California band Red Meat. I'm putting on a Johnny Paycheck tribute show in conjunction with Speedy's Wig City. So what the hell ... it's about two weeks early, but word is starting to leak out around here, so we may as well start publicizing it! It'll be Wednesday, March 19 at the Elbo Room, 647 Valencia St., San Francisco. Doors at 8:30, show at 9. Slated to appear at this time are:
Dave Alvin
Chris Gaffney
Red Meat
Dave Gonzales (from the Paladins)
Dallas Wayne
Johnny Dilks & the Visitacion Valley Boys
The Rounders
Jinx Jones
This lineup may change over the next couple weeks, but it'll be firmed up by the 1st of February. Ticket price is TBD. Performers are not getting paid; 100% of the gate goes directly to Johnny Paycheck, who has been hospitalized for a couple of years now with emphysema. It's the least we could do for one of the best honky tonk singers out there ... Note: the Elbo Room is small. Get there early. Each band has a 20 minute set (Dave Alvin will go on last and get longer), and each band will play at least two Paycheck songs, but can play more if they want.
It should be quite a party. The songs that people are choosing so far run the gamut from the early '60s material right on through the Billy Sherrill produced stuff from the '70s and '80s. We'll see ya there. Owen Bly, Ranchero Records, Oakland, CA - http://www.redmeat.net

I'll admit that I'm a bit slow, but I've only now discovered this website while surfing around. Thanks for supporting old time country music. I have a show each Wednesday morning on WORT-FM, 89.9, in Madison, Wisconsin. I play mostly "classic country music," with an occasional excursion into the music of such people as Dale Watson, Iris DeMent, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. I would appreciate it if you would mention the show and encourage "real" country musicians to send me their CDs.
I am also an historian of country music. My most recent book is called "Don't Get Above Your Raisin'": Country Music and the Southern Working Class" (University of Illinois Press). My first book, "Country Music, USA" (University of Texas Press), has just been released in a new edition.

Who knows the truth about the life of Country Music great "Texas Jim Robertson"? Some historians have his birth in North Carolina, while others give his origin in Batesville, Texas. Also, his death is shrouded in mystery. Most accounts have his death by suicide in 1966 in New Jersey. One unusual story has him living in Fort Worth, Texas after 1966 ,performing at Jam sessions, going by the name of Kent. Clifford Kent, an employee of Pioneer Oil Company, matched Texas Jim's physical characteristics exactly. and convinced most musicians in Cowtown that he was the one and only Texas Jim Robertson. Also, Kent supposedly died in Fort Worth in the early 1990's, was a WWII veteran, wore the same western clothes as Texas Jim, and sang in his style. Overall, my interest is "why "Texas Jim Roberston was never inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville? He was one of the first radio singing cowboys, helped get such greats as Chet Atkins, Roy Clark, etc.get a start in music , did several patriotic songs to raise morale in WWII- ex.Last Page of Mien Kampf, Rodger Young, etc.,was an RCA & BlueBird recording artist, made the famous "Gone Fishin" song with The 3 Suns, and inspired the youth of America as RCA's Children's artist on "Rootie Kazootie" in New York. Folks, It was a sad day for bluegrass. Not since Mr. Bill Monroe's passin' has the music world lost so much in just one man. Jim McReynolds of Jim & Jessie left this world for a better place on Dec. 31, 2002. Our hearts and our prayers go out to his family and associates. But we can gain comfort in the fact that he is in the Master's hand, and will forever be. And that one day, we will again hear his voice in song! For now our brother Jim no longer sings about our Lord but to Him. And what glory that must be. Col. Robert Morris - robert@countrycolonelrobertmorris.com - www.countrycolonelrobertmorris.com

You have a very complete site that is well maintained.  I am about to lose my mind trying to think of the name of a peddle steel guitar player who's name I THINK was Bill Strickland. This person would have played around the Washington DC area in the early 50s. Whoever he was happened to be a good friend of my (late) uncle and I just can't remember his name. I saw that you have a Bill Strickland listed under the "S" file, but no information. Do you have any idea how I could find the answer to my question? Thanking you in advance. I have been searching for the answer to something that I have always wondered. Hopefully someone might have an idea. :) In around '86 I saw Dottie West in Yakima, Washington (Tennessee Ernie Ford was also on the bill) and she introduced one of her backup singers as someone to watch for because she was going to be a big star. That singer was awesome... and sang one of her own songs. My memories aren't the best (had a lemon-sized brain tumor removed at the U of Washington in Oct of 87 at the age of 21) - but I do know that she was talented. I thought she also had red hair, but not absolutely sure. Victoria Shaw is one person I thought could have been backing Dottie West up at the time, but I just don't know. She was just as talented, lively, and natural as Ms. Shaw - so who knows ... maybe you do? I really miss Dottie too...country radio has changed way too much. I spent 17 years in radio and there are so many artists from the 70's thru early 90's who should still be played...most programmers wouldn't even know they were older songs in most cases! ;) Mia. I have been a country music fan for over 50 years and I am so sad to see what has happened in the last few years. I will not buy a CD/Cassette on which there is no melody, too many words for the notes, a "singer" who talks the lyrics and is not understandable, there is no story, and I can not dance to the beat (there is usually no beat). I am playing all the oldies that you could recognize by the opening notes and you could learn the words to sing along. Not many, if any songs put out today will be sung in the future while doing your housewrok!! So sad!! jlfrdm@aoal.com

Is the link to our new web site! Country Colonel Robert Morris is the brainchild of my beautiful wife, Irene. It is a coming home for me as a songwriter. For a while, I have helped other artist in their careers. But it's time to work on my own. So, with the opening of this new site, I open a new page of my career. You will get to read his updated Bio, listen to ten songs that I wrote, recorded by some of the best singers you'll ever hear. You'll also get to see what others in the music biz thinks of me. And of course, links to my friends and fellow writers and artist. We are still adding stuff to the site, so keep coming back! A very special thanks to James Madden. He creates one mean web site. Folks, for a great site, please contact this very talented man, and a close friend of the Colonel! (http://www.bayou.com/~jamie/private/). Drop us a e-mail back and tell us what you think. And if you have any ideas to make it a better site, please share your thoughts with us. Thanks again for the years of hanging in there with us, Col. Robert Morris - romo-colonel@watervalley.net

I am looking for information on a song I believe Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs sang. Not sure of the title but a main line in the song is "I still think the good things outweigh the bad." If anyone knows who did sing this song and what album it is on, I would appreciate a reply. Ginger - chitlincooker@hotmail.com

I would like to hear more of the old timers RE: George Jones, Ray Price etc. I recently saw a Trace Atkins show and it was more rock & roll than country. Western swing music is great. I think we should be calling your country stations and tell them about playing old country. Cal Harding - cale@ptd.net

Being a true believer that the best country is Traditional Country, I have had the honor co-writing with some dynamite artists such as : Paul Mateki, Grand Ole Opry Star Ernie Ashworth, Clint Miller, Jose Daniel, Andrew Dean, Ray Jones and many others. Feel welcome to visit my website that embraces True Country and Gospel. I have a worldwide column I write entitled "Rhonnie's Corner" on these respected sites: Country Gospel Connection http://www.countrygospelconnection.com/ and A-Miracle Website http://www.a-miracle-net.com/. Being a 5 time "Hall of Fame" inductee, and Award winning songwriter I have learned that ALL glory goes to Jesus Christ my Savior. God has blessed me with having a great mentor in Colonel Buster Doss of Stardust, and I am grateful. With 49 songs on the worldwide chart I know that the world wants to hear more and more Traditional Country and Gospel (they embrace one another). Thank you for this fantastic website, I loved visiting and letting you know how God is blessing "the gift of songriting" he has given me. Rhonnie Scheuerman - rhonnies@aol.com

Hello, I would love to introduce you to a country gospel artist that I feel will move you. Her name is Vicki Lee and her soulful songs will touch your hearts! She's the proud winner of "The Patriotic Song Of The Year 2002 Award" from NACMAI the song is called "Don't Let Us Fall" with Veterans day right around the corner I am inviting you to listen to the very powerful song! Vicki Lee's grandmother Mary Cote wrote a poem during WWII and after Sept. 11th, 2001 Vicki Lee's mother (Mary's daughter) with her mother's permission added her thoughts and created this deeply moving song and Vicki Lee set the melody ... The song will send chills down your spine! I invite to listen to it at: http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/362/vicki_lee.html -- you'll understand why it was named and awarded such an honor!
